Watch Videos On Your Meta Quest with External Storage

Perhaps you want to go on a trip and bring some videos to watch, or you have some high-definition content you don't want to steam over a network. With a few things, you can easily watch movie files on your Quest VR headset.

Hardware

  • VR Headset
  • Storage Storage Device - With an adapter, any one you have around the house will work
Note: A Hub can allow you to charge your headset while external storage is connected. You can also use it to connect a keyboard or other USB accessory. The Extension cable allows you room to move around a little without the hub hanging off of your head.

VR Application

I decided to go with SKYBOX VR Player. It is only $9.99 and has had no issues accessing an external Storage Device. It is also compatible with a wide range of common video file types.

External Storage Setup

To ensure your storage device is ready to go, use the Windows format tool by right-clicking on the drive and selecting format.

Once open, select NTFS for the File system and select Start.

Copy over the movies you want to watch on your VR headset.

Now, your drive is ready to connect to the VR headset using the USB-C Adapter as required.

VR Headset Walkthrough

First thing to note is that external storage is not recognized natively in the MetaOS. Here you can see using the Files application, the USB drive is not available.

Once you open SKYBOX VR Player it will confirm if you want to allow it access to the external storage:

Once you select ok, you will see it located on the left panel under available channels.

Now you will be able to view your available files and open any of the videos you added to the drive.
